Snow Closes Road in Hawaii
"...The road to the summit of Mauna Kea was closed Sunday because drifting snow as
high as three feet blocked the roadway while the rest of the state enjoyed temperatures in the mid - 70s, officials said..."

The 13,792 - foot summit was windy and foggy, and had a wind chill of 15 degrees below zero, according to the National Park Service.

Snow drifts above the 13,000 - foot level were up to two feet high, with lesser amounts accumulating farther below, it said.

The mountain and neighboring 13,681 - foot Mauna Loa remained under a winter storm warning, the National Weather Service reported Sunday night.

President's Day 2005
Today was a "No Sno". We were under a "Winter Storm Warning" for 3" to 6" of snow, turning to rain. It never happened. I was actually looking forward to it. Got all prepared to spend the afternoon and evening watching it build up and it didn't. It didn't even rain until early this morning. Disappointing. I'll bet it was even more of a bummer for all the snow equipment operators that were called in to take care of the streets. Snow plows, salt & sand trucks,etc. Not to worry, It snowed several times over the next few weeks.

No snow: Schweitzer considers earliest closing in 41 years

SANDPOINT, Idaho -- Barring a big snowstorm, Schweitzer Mountain Resort will close for the season after this weekend because of unseasonably warm temperatures and a dearth of snow.

It will end the shortest ski season in the northern Idaho resort's 41 years, officials said Thursday.

"We had some higher temperatures this week, and it pretty much did us in," Schweitzer spokeswoman Lisa Gerber said.

Like Schweitzer, the Mount Spokane Ski and Snowboard Park near Spokane, Wash., which has been closed since January, will consider reopening if more snow falls this month.

The National Weather Service is predicting mild temperatures and no precipitation through Thursday.

Two other Inland Northwest ski hills shortened operations to conserve what snow is on the slopes.

Silver Mountain near Kellogg will be closed Mondays through Wednesdays, and 49 Degrees North Mountain Resort near Chewelah, Wash., is only open Saturdays and Sundays.

Despite the poor snowpack, some skiers remained optimistic.

"Skiing is always good, but sometimes it's better than others," said Al Voltz. "Next year is going to be a dandy. It's bound to be."

Repetitive snow system moves into 14th day

The snow that has fallen for 13 consecutive days was expected to stretch into a fortnight today.

London, the South-East and East Anglia were expected to be the worst hit over the weekend by a repetitive weather pattern that has brought the most persistent snowfall in the capital since 1963. The culprit is a harsh and unusual north-easterly wind cycle.

Freezing conditions have closed almost 300 schools in Norfolk and Suffolk, and hundreds more in East Anglia. Vehicle recovery teams from the AA received 13,000 calls on Thursday - 33 per cent more than usual.

But forecasters are divided about temperatures for the coming week, with one warning of a settled cold weather cycle that will not shift and others expecting rising temperatures and drier weather.

The Met Office expects today's snow showers to bring the last flakes of the current cold snap and joins commercial forecaster WeatherNet in predicting slightly warmer temperatures that will nevertheless stay below the seasonal average of 8C.

But the PA WeatherCentre warned that the pattern of cold winds is too settled to disappear quickly and will bring a third week of bad weather.

Martin Shawyer, a forecaster at the Met Office said: "Sunday and the following week should be mainly dry with temperatures which will gradually start to get warmer.

"We have been very unlucky this year - Kent has had its worst weather in a decade and a run of snow like this in London has not been seen since 1963."

Missing Disco Boy Found Dead in the Snow

A 15-year-old boy who went missing after a school disco was today found dead in a snow covered field, police said.

The teenager�s mother raised the alarm after he failed to return home after the party in the remote village of Kinninvie, Co Durham, last night.

Detectives launched an investigation after finding his body at 3pm this afternoon in a fallow field about half a mile from the community centre where the disco had been held.

The social event had been organised and attended by pupils from Teesdale Comprehensive School, in Barnard Castle.

Students who were at the disco are expected to be questioned by officers as they try and piece together the youngster�s movements during the course of the evening.

A Durham Police spokesman said the boy�s family had been informed of his death, although his body has yet to be formally identified.

Detective Superintendent Harry Stephenson, who is leading the investigation, said it was too early to draw any conclusions at this stage and said he would wait for the results of a post mortem to establish how the boy died.

A force spokesman said: "Within an hour of the mother�s call the body of a 15-year-old was discovered in a fallow field about half a mile from the community centre across open countryside partially covered in snow."
